Have you ever been called a slur and how did you deal with it? - Lemmy.World

Someone called me redneck and I truly don’t give a flying fuck about it…
Completely ignore. If you respond in anyway, they achieve their purpose of being annoying.

If you respond in anyway, they achieve their purpose of being annoying.

I think that this is a good rule-of-thumb, but following it 100% of the time would be unwise. Sometimes you actually get a more desirable outcome by calling the person out, and gathering support against them.

Where do we draw the line for slur?

I’m sure we can all agree that one word that starts with N would count, but what about doo-doo-head, dumbass, or fatso?

As a student of history I could mention a couple besides the N word that probably no one uses today. But I don’t want to get banned.

Uh, pretty sure I was called a bitch for the first time at like age 3. How I’ve dealt with being called bitch/slut/cunt/hag/feminazi/whore/so on and so forth has changed as I’ve grown and also by the specific experience.

Men get called “dicks”. I would consider that a slur and would guess it’s not a one-time “this is how I dealt with it” kind of occurrence for lots of men.

I was called “gay” multiple times in my life. I’m aroace.

Can you tell I hate living in Morocco?

Why do you keep asking these questions? Did the previous answers not satisfy you?

Not directly, I think. However indirectly certainly; “Always those Arabs messing up our country! - oh no, not you. You are half Arabian and a good person”.

Yeah, no. That doesn’t work with me. Racism is racism. I got up and left without saying a word with everyone who said that (which were like 2 or 3 people).

I am pretty hard to offend because I know they are trying to offend me and I know they are made of easily mechanically separated meat.
me n my coworkers laughed in their face

I was first called a dyke then bull dyke in elementary school. I had no idea what it meant and the boy who was calling me that was hitting my head from his seat on the bus behind me. So I grabbed his backpack and and flipped him over the seat.

All the gay slurs were the most common to use against me. Though I did get called a n- lover a few times as well.

When I was younger I fought back physically and/ or verbally. As I got older I would just question the person on why what they were calling me was a bad thing.

Though I do think my favorite come back for any of the gay slurs when thrown by afab people would be saying: “yeah and trust me, it will never be an issue for you.” While giving them the up and down with a disgusted expression. Seeing the confusion then anger then confusion go across their faces was always amazing. They couldn’t argue with it other wise they would be saying they wanted to be seen as attractive by someone of the same sex.

Sorry you had to go thru that…nice comeback BTW…no sarcasm.

All the examples you told, say absolutely nothing about you but tons of things about the other person.

They are basically shouting “LOOK AT ME, I’M A HATEFUL BIGOT!!”
Thats way worse then anything they could call you.

That’s pretty advice, but doesn’t help much when you’re a kid who’s getting chronicly bullied while the adults look on.
I didn’t say this would help nor did I give any advice. I just stated my opinion about bigoted bullies.
All the time. A slur can tell you about one’s honest thoughts which in turn can tell you about the slur. In any case, it affects how I see them which in turn affects my courses of action towards them.
I’m a trans PoC immigrant. I get catcalled and called slurs very frequently. Nowadays I mostly just ignore them unless they pose a danger.

“Are you saying you expect us to warranty the engine and a 10-yo car with 140,000 miles, that you bought used? Because that ain’t gonna happen.”

“Ooohh! You a smart ass little cracker ain’t ya!” And hung up.

Had to grab a black coworker and ask what a cracker was.

Not even 48h ago. Well in the end I involuntarily admitted the offender to hospital.

Worked on the ambulance. Basically got stopped by a member of the public and informed a guy acting strange in front of a shop. Had a look, got called a few very nasty slurs, called for police backup. Clearly the patient was of unsound mind, not orientated, etc. After some more talking the cops restrained him upon my advice and he got admitted to a somatic(normal) hospital. Whole trip was full of slurs towards everyone, even random passerbys.

Somatic hospital checked him throughly and then transferred him to a psychiatric hospital.

Ha, working in healthcare you get called every name and slur there is. Worst for me was emergency room and when I worked a specialised intoxication ward. You can really learn sonething and fill up your ‘alternative’ vocabulary.

One time that stayed with me, was a patient calling me a ‘Dictator’. But it was acute psychiatry and most patients were there on court order, so I kinda was dictating what they could and couldn’t do.

Damn. That sounds a lot like my own former workplaces.

Do you by any chance work for the MRI/RDI?

Shit all the time lmao. I just respond the same
I think. There are not really any that get any type of rise out of me.
Got called a fucking terrorists after 9/11. I’m Mexican.
WTF tell me your not serous because that is insanely stupid and dangerous.
Not sure how old you are but calling brown people terrorists was extremely common after 9/11.
Im 40 and to be honest never thought of it.

I grew up during a time where “gay” was a common insult in school. And being called that probably impacted me more than I gave it credit for… I guess some other things (I went through a lot of abuse in high school) but none stick out to me as such.

More recently, some bi male friends of mine have been using the bundle-of-sticks word to refer to me and others, so I’m wondering if that term in particular is being reclaimed.

Other than that, apart from an American friend not realising how problematic “special” is, I’ve not really been slurred at. I don’t think I’d take it very well though if it happened irl, given how sensitive I am…

I remember these times, and do I ever have regrets. We were all dumb kids at some point, and we really didn’t know as much as we thought we did.

Not giving a single fuck like it should be.
Been called a bitch a handful of times. I usually say, “Why, thank you!”
I grew up being called faggot all the time. And since I live in a redneck filled shithole, I still occasionally hear it from MAGA loving pieces of shit; mostly from moving vehicles because the assholes are too cowardly to say or do shit within kicking distance.
But how did you deal with it?
Get pissed then ignore it. Maybe think about following the vehicle to it’s destination so I can key it and slash their tires. Though I don’t actually ever do that; it’s fun to think about.

I’m embarrassed to say it was only a couple years ago when some white people got national attention for getting bent out of shape about being called “cracker” that I learned it doesn’t mean like, “bland and pale like a Saltine,” but is a reference to enslavers and their whips. I’d always thought it was kinda cute, like “Mayo-American.”

So I used to give a kind of “Yeah… you got me…” chuckle when called that, but now it just makes me sad and throws me into a bit of an existential crisis on behalf of my ancestors.

There is a charming Lemmy user who likes to call people “hags” after mining their comments to learn if they are of the lady persuasion. I do not yet, but plan to some day identify as a “swamp hag” so it feels preemptive, but a bit exciting.

Not laughing at you being called a cracker but laughing because swamp hag made me think of Poison Ivy from the DC comics. And until this post did I even think cracker was related to slavery. I always thought its because I am white and look like a Saltine. Thank you for the education …no sarcasm
At least in certain circles, “hag” has been claimed by older women in a joking fashion. Still, for someone to go digging into comment history just to be able to use that is kinda mental.
I’d forgotten about r/oldhagfashion from the other place. I do miss it. I don’t think my hag fashion is on point enough yet to start it myself though. Someday.
When I was a kid I had a friend who’d call me the R slur pretty frequently. Besides ADHD Im basically nurotypjcal, he just meant to say I was being stupid. I kind of internalized it at the time and it gave me some self confidence issues about my intelligence, but I think that would’ve happened even if he wasn’t using a slur.
Sorry you had to go thru that mate.
I got called a white N-word by an African man because I was doing my job. I hung up on his ass after I realized what he was saying.
Lately I’ve been turning around and saying “Did you just call me a creep? Why did you call me that?”
First time, I sort of didn’t process it, just froze and went on without replying, then got mad about it later. Completely embarassing
A Nazi called me a fat cunt on Facebook today in my spam messages and then blocked me from replying LOL. He looks like Alex Jones 2.0.
A hexbear called me a “chaser” because I said my wife is a femboy. I laughed it off because I don’t care what children believe.

Somebody here on Lemmy sent me a message calling me the hard R (I’m Black) after posting a pro-LGBT comment.

I read the message, marked the notification as read, and closed my Lemmy tab. Problem solved, no response needed.

At the risk of showing my “privilege” card with all the boxes ticked ….

  • I was called a “Hebe” when I first tried to grow a beard. The guy was annoyed we were slingshotting water balloons off the balcony, so we sent more his way
  • someone tried to call me a “cracker” but I laughed because that pitiful attempt at a slur has no power. Y’all have to do better
  • someone tried call me gay, but I stood with my best friend, who happens to be gay.

I had to ride my bike quite a way to work as my car broke down (in the US this isn’t that common, but is with immigrants) so someone driving by shouted Mexican! and threw what I’m pretty sure was a churro at me lol

(I’m so white that if naked I’d be perfectly camouflaged in the snow.)

Had someone repeatedly call me a faggot after I told them staying 5 hours past check-out, for free, isn’t a thing. He also threatened to break my nose.

I’m 6’4 and over 300lbs, and I shit you not this man was a full head shorter than me and skinny like a twig. I couldn’t stop smiling as he made these threats and insults, and just waited for him to try coming over or around the desk (I had pepper spray and a big-ass maglite with me to boot, it was a hotel near a casino that still had smoking rooms and was frequented by drug addicts and hookers, and I was the overnight guy). He never did, and when the cops showed up he tried playing dumb and innocent. The cops didn’t buy it, especially since a co-worker had seen the entire thing and told them the same, and escorted him from the premises before check-out.

And the whole reason dipshit didn’t want to check out on time? He wanted to go to college classes first and leave all his shit in the room (which, by the way, they trashed). Not how it works, housekeeping needs to clean it, either pack up or pay up. And instead, he wound up missing his classes and checking out on time! The stupidity of the common hotel guest never ceases to amaze me – I have frequently joked that people remember to pack their toothbrush, spare underwear, and they might even remember to shut off the kitchen stove, but they almost always leave their brain by the door before heading out.
