It's wild that lichen can have algae or cyanobacteria as the photosynthesizer ... when algae is a eucaryote and so much more complex than a cyanobacteria.

They are mentioned like they are interchangeable in some of the simple definitions... but it seems like it would make a huge difference in the level of complexity available to the lichen.
