Electricity always takes the path of least resistance, there will have been an easier path to ground than his body (which was likely insulated from ground)
He wasn’t there with the arcs. It’s a double-exposure photo.
Take a photo with him, then remove him and start the arcs, talking a very, very short exposure photo.
