Recently learned this is a double exposure image. They took an exposure in an unlit room for the lightning, then put Tesla in there reading a book and took the second exposure.

I didn’t know it wasn’t double exposure, too.

Why wasn’t he instantly fried by some of those lightnings?
Electricity always takes the path of least resistance, there will have been an easier path to ground than his body (which was likely insulated from ground)
He wasn’t there with the arcs. It’s a double-exposure photo. Take a photo with him, then remove him and start the arcs, talking a very, very short exposure photo.
