Popping on to say:

A lot of rumors are about to fly about this rally. Trump's team is 100% going to try and take advantage of this situation. So will malicious foreign actors/bots/etc.

Please don't auto share. Check your sources, and vet their wording/sourcing carefully.

Remember: here's the breaking news handbook. All of these are good rules to stand by at the moment.
@Celeste_pewter this is so true. The rush to be first to report feeds all the later conspiracy theories

@Celeste_pewter

Isn't that what you're doing by saying Trump's team is 100% going to try and take advantage of this situation? How do you know 100% of anything?

@pete @Celeste_pewter because it's the sort of thing any politician's team needs to do to be good at politics. He wouldn't have a decent shot of winning the presidency despite a fascist manifesto if he didn't have a team that's good at politics.
@pete @Celeste_pewter
No. The rules are about how you should deal with something that’s labeled „Breaking News“.

@Celeste_pewter

When the inexplicable happens I ask ‘What time?’ I must admit this comes out of the blue.I was alive through the assassinations of the 1960’s etc.

@Celeste_pewter No...it really happened the way we said it!
@Celeste_pewter Thanks for popping on, not off-it's so much more fun!
@Celeste_pewter it's simple. A stadium full of people, loads of secret service people in the crowd and protecting shooter positions, and yet Trump gets an improbable wound and the shooter disappears. Right.
@Celeste_pewter Amen. Desperate liars will do and say anything.
@Celeste_pewter I agree with you. But I have learned today that if you don’t celebrate violence against Trump you will be vilified on #mastodon. And if you do celebrate violence everyone else will vilify you. There is no winning here.
@bishop @Celeste_pewter
I'm sorry that's been your experience. Personally, I have no problem with anyone who thinks any violence is bad, and as a moderator, I encourage you to report those people who are harassing you for that.
@Celeste_pewter
As I said in my post earlier, at this point, we know nothing.
@Celeste_pewter Similar thing happened in Slovakia already, after the current PM got shot, he started throwing shit at the opposition (along with many people from the coalition) without citing any sources and the popularity of his party rose. While the opposition tried to calm down the aggression and strongly disagreed with the shooter and his act.
