If you really wanted to "democratize creativity" you'd argue for every human being to have paid time off to find, follow and develop their creativity, their perspective and their voice.

Creativity is the work that allows people to bring forth their own selves regardless of who pays for it. It's part of the essence of being human.

We know that many people just don't get the resources, the freedom, the time to explore that part of being human. And we're all poorer for it.

@tante
So true!
not to underestimate the creativity of the poor to manage life. The management skills of so many people fighting in one or two jobs, caring for family and on top some social work...
It's a sick society that doesn't find a way to worship that.
@tante and also for quality art and music teaching in all schools, not just overhyping teaching of STEM subjects
@tante "Let's democratize this thing by turning it into a product you can pay a corporation for" that's not democracy, that's capitalism. That's describing capitalism
@mcc @tante I feel like both these toots are responding to a thing, is there a thing? Or is this all very general
@nyankat @tante I assumed we were subtweeting weird defenses of "AI" companies
@mcc @nyankat @tante that. But it was sparked by @brianmerchant's latest "Blood in the Machine" newsletter
@tante @mcc @brianmerchant cool, thanks for filling in the missing context!

@mcc @tante
"Let's democratize this thing by turning it into a product you can pay a corporation for"

Yeah, they're effectively just changing the bar of entry from a test of talent to a test of wealth.

@tante Yes, also as @brianmerchant wrote in the latest newsletter, "democratize" has become meaningless PR speak.

@tante

Thinking on this topic is *exactly* what led to me changing from a libertarian to something like a socialist a decade or so ago.

I still value freedom. Not just for myself or my family, but for my neighbors who might not have skills that the wealthy see as valuable right now, and we're not living in a society where it's "government regulation" or "taxes" that are hurting the communities I walk in...

@tante @blogdiva We need to stop eliminating arts and humanities education from lower grades. Arts/humanities is hard to teach, but it’s what helps people develop their creativity and critical thinking skills.
@tante I don't think anyone genuinely supports AI out of a desire to democratize creativity. I personally support it for selfish reasons, because it allows me to get base images for manipulations without having to worry about copyright or snapping photos myself. As for other people, a lot of them probably just use the "democratization" rhetoric as an excuse. I've met a lot of people in places like 4Chan who genuinely hate creative people and want them to lose their livelihood.
