We’re beginning a stretch of HOT weather so it’s time for this fix I didn’t think of until last year! We have a single, west-facing window, it’s a greenhouse box window. In the summer it absolutely bakes our kitchen. In the winter cold pours in from it.

Solution: 2 insulating foam panels. The side facing out the window is coated in Mylar, so it even reflects sun away! While it looks janky, we found it helped a lot.

Ursa hates it because he has a mat in this window box and likes to lie there, chattering at birds.

Just got an emergency call from the City to all Parks & Rec employees. Heat index for #Portland is approaching the danger zone. People are encouraged to drink water regularly, limit activities, and get to shade.

I remind students that my yoga mantra for summer practice is, “Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink water!”*

#DehydrationWarningSigns

- If you’re thirsty you’re already a little dehydrated!
- If it’s been ages since you’ve needed to pee, you’re dehydrated!
-If your urine is dark and you haven’t taken B vitamins or eaten beets recently, you’re dehydrated!

Past these signs you start seeing symptoms of heat exhaustion.

**It’s possible to drink TOO MUCH WATER! Hyponatremia is seriously dangerous, heart failure/damage serious!

Be sure to get some electrolytes in you along with your water. Gatorade, Pedialyte (not just for children!), and coconut water drinks are great sources. You can also add a little salt to your water; 1/5th to 1/4th of a teaspoon of salt per liter. You can use either standard table salt, sea salt, or Himalayan salt – whatever you prefer.

There are some cooling centers open today and tomorrow: https://www.portlandmercury.com/news/2024/07/06/47290180/updated-cooling-centers-now-open-around-multnomah-county-amid-excessive-heat-wave

Since I teach my fall prevention program through the City of Portland I get the citywide employee calls. It’s a good use of robo-call tech!

UPDATED: Cooling Centers Now Open around Multnomah County Amid Excessive Heat Wave

Update 11:30 am, July 6: In response to continuing dangerous heat levels, three cooling centers are open today, (Saturday, July 6) until 10 pm and will reopen at noon tomorrow (Sunday, July 7). The OSHA-NIOSH Heat Safety Tool (app) was recommended on the emergency call. It’s a good addition to my collection of weather related apps!

OSHA-NIOSH Heat Safety Tool App | NIOSH | CDC

The OSHA-NIOSH Heat Safety Tool is a useful resource for planning outdoor work activities based on how hot it feels throughout the day. Featuring real-time heat index and hourly forecasts, specific to your location, as well as occupational safety and health recommendations from OSHA and NIOSH.

Running out to #Hillsboro today on a pharmacy errand. It’s reached “convection oven” level out here with a west wind blowing hot air right down TV Highway! #pdxtst #Oregon #heatwave2024
