On display in our gallery this July, our Open Exhibition, Unfrequented Paths: Refuge.

We've got a number of artists showing their work in our gardens, museum, and gallery.

A word from our curator, Claire Garrett DL:

"Curating the exhibition at The Richard Jefferies Museum has been a total privilege and a real joy. It brought home to me the many different interpretations of the word 'Refuge', whether in a practical, emotional or ecological sense.

As CEO of the Harbour Project in Swindon, the concept of Refuge is front and centre of my day to day life. For us, Refuge is very much about safety - safety for people fleeing war and persecution and to have a safe place to rebuild their lives. We are currently supporting around 1300 people from over 70 different countries, which just shows that many people living around the world cannot take safety for granted. Instead, they make incredible journeys to find Refuge.
"The theme of Refugee Week (17th to 23rd June) this year has been 'home'. In many respects, refuge and home are similar concepts. Someone described home to me as somewhere where the spirit thrives, a comfortable place where we can share our feelings.
"Looking at the artworks on display at the Richard Jefferies museum, many evoke similar feelings. That might be the reassurance of a warm embrace from a loved one, the protective cocoon of a snail's shell or something solid to hold onto when everything else around you seems to be moving.
"Some of the pieces also reminded me that all living creatures can take comfort and refuge in nature, but also that everything is moving and changing - creating and eroding refuge with the passage of the sun and the seasons. One storm (meteorological or political), one high tide, or one dig of a spade, can change refuge for something or somebody forever.

"Thank you to the incredible artists who have offered their work to this thought-provoking exhibition."
