Cloned https://github.com/antirez/dump1090, ran make, ran `./dump1090 --interactive --net` and BOOM, ADS-B on my Mac with a whip antenna on RTL-SDR v4 (v3 might be better, better antenna would definitely be better).

Radio is magical. Need to figure out what flight platform to send to.

@geerlingguy uh, nice. and yeah, there was some schism going on in the adsb-scene a while ago between https://www.adsbexchange.com/ and https://adsb.fi/ — please let us know what you find when taking the deep dive :)

@geerlingguy @yetzt AFAIK both of those two are involved in drama and are not recommended to be used. Airplanes.live is the successor set up by the former engineers of the other two and is constructed to be open and with stronger leadership
@geerlingguy I'm amazed at what it can pull from the noise. I can't see any signals when looking at 1090MHz but dump1090 grabs all sorts of data.
@ajh Yeah, same thought here—was observing in Gqrx and saw *nothing*... but dump1090 sitting there spitting out messages. I guess like CW doesn't need much signal to get a message through.

@geerlingguy I really wish there was a truly open flight platform. All of the flight platforms I’m aware of charge for API requests. Don’t really want to send data to a company that will just monetize it.

However I do understand the server cost of running one of these services… just wish there was a better option.

@geerlingguy you can send to multiple and FlightAware will give you a free Enterprise account if you provide your feed to them.
@geerlingguy, seeing as you like RPis so much, check this out: https://github.com/wiedehopf/adsb-wiki/wiki/Raspbian-Lite%3A-ADS-B-receiver. Been feeding multiple sites solidly for a years for me!

@geerlingguy if you go further down the path and get into ACARS messages then check out airframes.io
@geerlingguy feed it to airplanes.live :)
They are consisted of former ADSBExchange engineers that left after the drama started, and airplanes.live is set up to be fully open and not fall to the same fate :)
@geerlingguy all of them. Fr24, planefinder piaware. Really easy if dockerised
@geerlingguy if you don't want to spend money on a better antenna but use some leftover coax cable, have a look at this: https://discussions.flightaware.com/t/quick-spider-no-soldering-no-connector/19181

@geerlingguy you might also need a second SDR for UAT traffic monitoring 😉. And SDR-Enthusiasts solution is the golden standard.
@geerlingguy https://airplanes.live/ is run by the adsbx team that got shafted in the sale

@geerlingguy also check out https://github.com/wiedehopf/readsb instead of dump1090. It's much lighter on resources and seems to do better decoding
