About ten years ago a friend told me #ClimateCrisis activists were going about it all wrong. Stop talking about saving the environment, the environment will be just fine after we are dead and gone. What we are trying to save are humans. Human survival. Nobody cares about the environment. Asking people to draw that conclusion themselves is too much.

There has been a shift to talk about human survival lately but it keeps focusing on how poor people are disproportionately affected by #ClimateBreakdown as if the existence of capitalism itself isn't proof enough that the rich don't care how many poor people die.

We need to focus on the rich nations dying. The news sort of ignores it though. China getting flooded didn't really get in my radar much... But then it's those people, not real people... Just like how we thought covid affected those people up into Italy got hit.

Every instance of rich countries getting hit by #ClimateChange needs to be amplified out the wazoo on every social media platform we can. Then we need to talk to every RW crazy uncle, aunt, grandpa and if we can't convince them to vote for a good guy, discourage them from voting at all. Just shit talk about how everyone is bad and they should stay home. Do whatever you need to do. All is fair in love and war and this is a war on all our lives.

We need different strategies and we need to be all in this together. Let's stop attacking each other over minor differences while the oligarchs kill us.

@chu The only way that #bigcorp is going buy in on mitigating #climatechange is if we can show them that doing so is #profitable . Or at least how not doing so will lead to #lostrevenue

#bigcorporations do not care about #people only #money. #unfortunately

#environment #environmentalscience #earthscience #economy

@readbeanicecream

Insurance companies are leading the way by pulling out of entire states.

The states will be stupid though and backstop even more stupidity

@chu Unfortunately that only hurts the #littlepeople and creates increased rates and #insurance #monopolies for #bigcorporations willing to take the gamble. These states should actually hold #bigcorp accountable through financial sanctions. This includes #bigoil #bigtech #bigdata #BigEnergy

But you know, the won't because #lobbyistslinepockets

@chu Something that disturbs me is that we're taking a lot of innocent species with us!

A yes/no on whether the environment will survive strikes me as simplistic framing...

@chu Andreas Malm has a few thoughts. Elections will never save us because capitalism owns those too. What would have been ecological defense in the form of sabotage is going to quickly become raw survival as people raid infrastructure just to escape thirst and heat.

@chu
We also need positive stories of actions that work.

Scared people are not likely to come together for the greater good.

@chu except it’s not just humans we’re destroying but also many other animal species (not just individuals but entire species!), plant species, ecosystems,…

@chu I am personally convinced that the first paragraph of this is spot on.

Some greenie friends tell me I'm being overly pessimistic, but I feel completely the opposite; the 'planet' has been around for about 4.5 billion years, and changed a LOT in that time. We tipped up (relatively) a few minutes ago, and basically got along with the planet for a while, then shat the bed badly. Once we do the obvious thing and go extinct, the 'planet' will be just fine.

@chu ...Also, when people talk about 'the environment' they ALWAYS mean 'an environment suitable for humans', but the planet was inimical to human life for a very long time, and may well become so again. All people are doing at the moment is accelerating that process somewhat.
