Starting today, people using Threads in 100+ countries can turn on sharing to the fediverse. 🌎
💡Fediverse Explainer: Think of it like a common standard for social media sites where you can share content across all of them, with just one account.
Imagine posting to Tik Tok and people on Instagram could follow you, watch your Tik Tok and like it from Instagram without even joining Tik Tok.
When you post on Threads, people can follow you from Mastodon and soon you’ll be able to follow Mastodon accounts without having to create an account there.
This standard, called “Activity Pub” will make the social internet better and more democratic. If Twitter had been on the Fediverse, and you didn’t like what Musk was doing with it, you could close up shop there and move to Threads with all your followers and content intact. If @Zuck goes crazy in a few years, you can move somewhere else.
Just like someone on Gmail can send an email to someone with an Outlook email or if Hotmail goes under, people just get another email company but email itself doesn’t disappear. The Fediverse is that central standard, like email, but for social media.
