No matter which direction Ranger Sarah looks, it seems that the Salt Plains go on for ever. Selenite is a crystallized form of gypsum. Chemically, it is a hydrous calcium sulfate. Gypsum is a common mineral that takes on a variety of crystal forms and shapes. These selenite crystals form just below the salt surface. Most are not found deeper than two feet.

@AdventuresofRangerSarah does anything live in the salt plains? It looks so barren and desolate.
@nick_helmholdt The salt flats of the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge are a major nesting site for the endangered interior least tern, threatened western snowy plover, and American avocet. The flats are also a major migration rest area for hundreds of thousands of shorebirds during spring, summer, and fall. While vegetation on the flats is sparse, the birds feed on the salt brine flies that hatch when water is available.

The trail goes through wooded and open areas, beneath towering cottonwood trees, past marshes and ponds, and to a shore and waterfowl watching area on Sand Creek Bay.

Ranger Sarah spots some Turkey Vultures circling above. Small, unfeathered head and hooked bill aid these scavengers in consuming carrion. Their weak talons are ill suited for grasping live prey. Vultures do not build nests, but lay their eggs in a sheltered spot; cliff ledge or cave, hollow log.
