@kcarr2015 @JohnnyDoesntCare is out grabbing our takeout tonight, but I think he could weigh in on this. My understanding is that with nuclear power if we were willing to have smaller output we could greatly improve safety... but I defer to his judgment/background.

Thorium reactors are both much safer and much cheaper and were considered as a solution back in the 1950s, however - and there's always a "however" - thorium is lower energy output and harder to extract despite it being three times more plentiful than uranium. Also, the uranium processing infrastructure was already in full swing to build nuclear weapons, so getting a hold of uranium was easier. And here we are.
