Just before launching an open #Bandcamp alternative, I probably have to change the name from "planetary.fm" to something else -- mostly because it's too similar to "planetary.social" the distributed app that's moving to Nostr

Help me choose between some alternatives? What would work best, grab more attention, and most help local bands to launch themselves on the #Fediverse?

I was thinking that a decentralized version of Bandcamp should be called starling.social. Ala funkwhale and mastodon. Great mimics and known for forming huge flocks. Might sound too similar to Starlink tho.

@wjmaggos Cool name! It's a pretty commonly known name, so I'm not so worried about the confusion with the satellite network :)

But.. It looks like someone's already using starling.social so that's probably out.

The thing to remember is that the whole server is 100% open. I'm standing up *an* instance, but not *the* instance. So if you know anyone who wants to run it using their own name...

what's your vision? I'd want a server as easy to setup as WordPress that an artist or label could use and customize as their main site, but which also acted as a node in a decentralized version of Spotify and Mastodon like client allowing people to tell others about what they liked (human virality of songs). so we'd need that server software, an app and I guess some kind of open listening protocol that would tie it all together. then automatic donations based on time listened someday.

I have some ideas, but to paraphrase an old military quote: "No business plan survives first contact with the customer"

For now I'm shooting for a home page that's as easy as Facebook that personalizes as well as WordPress.

But more importantly, I want to get *something* into people's hands that will inspire them, then listen to what they want most and code like hell

I'm betting people will ask for enhancements like: music discovery, a federated player, and digital sales
