Fed up with my original mastodon instance behaviour and want to really boost federation concept.

Any advice where to migrate?

Should I go for a self hosted one?

Any advice on how to migrate smoothly?

@beaufils
I had the idea to setup esr.social for french researchers #ESR with a Mangane instance (which is more similar to X in terms of UI). That would require a team leader setting up a small team to operate/moderate/advertise this instance, to give trust into it by avoiding a monoadmin user. There are multiple researchers and institutional accounts who could certainly join it and/or give a hand on these topics. But never had enough energy to set this up đŸ€“

@beaufils (what is boost federation BTW? đŸ€”)

@myoan

Aligning my thoughts & ideas on federation with my use of mastodon.

Being on a *too big* instance breaks the spirit of the whole thing IMHO.

I would appreciate to benefit from experience/expertise of people who had time to study and experiment more than me.

For instance, before migrating to a single hosted instance or a much larger shared one, I would like to list pro and cons of each approach as well as technical requirements (RAM, disk, admin time, etc.).

@myoan

Maybe @aral or @mwl would have time to enlight us on self hosted instance.

@beaufils @myoan @mwl Ok, so off the top of my head:

Mastodon isn’t really designed for single-person instances; everything about it overkill for this use case. Is it possible, yes? Will it be using up way more resources than necessary? Yes. Will you run into scaling issues on a single-person instance? If you have a lot of followers *and* you engage with them, yes, you could end up launching a denial-of-service attack on yourself each time you reply to an active thread

@aral a question I've never seen a concise answer to: is the problem you're describing a Mastodon problem or an ActivityPub problem?
@luis_in_brief Both. They’re intertwined, although it is possible to make less resource intensive/single-person ActivityPub servers, the multi-user aspect is part of the protocol.
