Fed up with my original mastodon instance behaviour and want to really boost federation concept.

Any advice where to migrate?

Should I go for a self hosted one?

Any advice on how to migrate smoothly?

@beaufils
I had the idea to setup esr.social for french researchers #ESR with a Mangane instance (which is more similar to X in terms of UI). That would require a team leader setting up a small team to operate/moderate/advertise this instance, to give trust into it by avoiding a monoadmin user. There are multiple researchers and institutional accounts who could certainly join it and/or give a hand on these topics. But never had enough energy to set this up đŸ€“

@beaufils (what is boost federation BTW? đŸ€”)

@myoan

Aligning my thoughts & ideas on federation with my use of mastodon.

Being on a *too big* instance breaks the spirit of the whole thing IMHO.

I would appreciate to benefit from experience/expertise of people who had time to study and experiment more than me.

For instance, before migrating to a single hosted instance or a much larger shared one, I would like to list pro and cons of each approach as well as technical requirements (RAM, disk, admin time, etc.).

@myoan

Maybe @aral or @mwl would have time to enlight us on self hosted instance.

@beaufils @myoan @mwl Ok, so off the top of my head:

Mastodon isn’t really designed for single-person instances; everything about it overkill for this use case. Is it possible, yes? Will it be using up way more resources than necessary? Yes. Will you run into scaling issues on a single-person instance? If you have a lot of followers *and* you engage with them, yes, you could end up launching a denial-of-service attack on yourself each time you reply to an active thread

@beaufils @myoan @mwl
 (See https://ar.al/2022/11/09/is-the-fediverse-about-to-get-fryed-or-why-every-toot-is-also-a-potential-denial-of-service-attack/)

It will also take time and effort to run your own instance, even if you’re technically capable. This is why I have the way more capable @jan run my instance at https://toot.io. Very happy with it there (see https://toot.io/mastodon_hosting.html). I’m on the community plan, I believe.

Hth :)

Is the fediverse about to get Fryed? (Or, “Why every toot is also a potential denial of service attack”)

Every time I post something that gets lots of engagement, I essentially end up carrying out a denial of service attack on myself. What does this say about the design of Mastodon and ActivityPub and the future of the fediverse?

Aral Balkan

What @aral said.

Mine is hosted by spacebear.

@beaufils @myoan @jan

@aral @myoan @mwl @jan

Thanks for these advises which confirm my fears.

I will look for a nice instance and will fund the structure which runs it in a way or another.

@aral @beaufils @myoan @mwl I can tell you masto admin even on a single user instance has some surprising overhead. Storage fills up over time. You have to just figure this all out. I do Linux for a living and I find it a bit of a pain on occasion.

@sullybiker @aral @myoan @mwl
Thanks.

That is what I feared.

@beaufils @aral @myoan @mwl I have not really looked at alternatives but don't be discouraged. Nothing is insurmountable. It's just time (lol)

@sullybiker @beaufils @aral @myoan

I'm told gotosocial is good for single users, and I have hope for snac.

@beaufils
In my experience so far, gotosocial has required both minimal resources and maintenance.

You give up on having a built-in web client, but if you only need to host a single user / household / polycule it is pretty ideal.

@aral @myoan
@aral a question I've never seen a concise answer to: is the problem you're describing a Mastodon problem or an ActivityPub problem?
@luis_in_brief Both. They’re intertwined, although it is possible to make less resource intensive/single-person ActivityPub servers, the multi-user aspect is part of the protocol.
@beaufils depending on your usage you could also set up your own pleroma instance. Took me one evening to set up mine. I'm using a cheap vps to run it, with some other services on it too.
4vcpu cores (didn't find what cpu they are using) and 6gb ram

I can share my experience with a self-hosted single-user Mastodon instance. I tried it back in 2020. I was unable to successfully run it on any Cloud VPS server that had less than 4GB of RAM and 2 vCPU. This cost me $20 USD per month (plus a few extra $$$ for automatic backups). When I tried to install it on a cheaper/lower-spec server, I could either not get past the installation without encountering Out of Memory errors, or I could get it running but anytime I tried to do something like add media to a post, I would get Out of Memory errors.

Nevertheless I tried it for a few months, but I decided to shut it down due to the $20+ USD per month price tag. It was during the Covid-19 pandemic and I had other monthly bills to focus on.

Fast-forward to 2024 and I wanted to try setting up a self-hosted single-user instance again, but without the high cost, so I went with another fediverse software compatible with ActivityPub. I'm running it on a server with only 1GB RAM and 1 vCPU which I'm currently paying $5 USD per month plus an extra $1 for automatic backups. The cost is more manageable for me and I haven't had any technical issues with it yet, it just works.

If you are looking to stay on Mastodon, there is a service called @mastohost and they have a plan that starts at $6 USD per month and is fully managed by @hugo. It looks pretty cool. Perhaps you can ask him about a self-hosted single-user instance on that Moon plan.

@dan @myoan @mastohost

Thanks.

What is your software?

Soapbox front-end / Rebased back-end.

Ready to install Soapbox? This guide will teach you how.

I've played around with Pleroma and snac2 for a single-user instance. they're both easier to install and maintain than mastodon. snac2 is a lot easier to deal with in general and it has the added benefit of having a UI that isn't a clone of twitter

Why not join your force with https://social.sciences.re / https://sciences.re for that.

If I migrate I think I need something more large in terms of topics (even if sciences.re is not retricted).
