Met some of our #nasa giss #climate interns today, including a young woman from Rochester.

She drove to Poughkeepsie thinking to take the MetroNorth into #NYC to visit in person for a few days. But it was much more cost effective for her to pay for her tolls and parking and *drive* into #nyc instead of taking the train

I blame you for a million bad choices made every day for folks to drive where they ought to take the train - it should always be cheaper to take mass transit.

@atthenius MNRR fare doesn't look terrible to me, but maybe parking in Poughkeepsie is expensive. What's she paying for tolls and city parking?

@roadskater

She told me she worked the numbers and it was cheaper to drive. Tolls on the Henry Hudson bridge? Or I87? Plus gas and parking maybe or maybe not around giss.

But the round trip peak fare to P is relatively much more expensive. (Because individuals pay per ride for MNR fares but do not pay per drive to use nyc streets; nyc taxpayers subsidize those. We need tolling not just to cbd but all Manhattan.)

So she’s staying w family in Poughkeepsie only to drive.
