Still working through WWDC videos. A lot of interesting stuff. The CarPlay videos are kind of wild. The next gen CarPlay was announced WWDC 2022, then Porsche showed a teaser gauge cluster at the end of 2023 that isn’t shipping in anything. The two 2024 videos are basically a sales pitch and an explainer for the 2022 announcement … obviously a lot of extra work has happened in two years, but … will anything ever ship with this?
The first video, “Say hello to the next generation of CarPlay design system” is a sales pitch about how a car company’s brand will only be mildly diluted into a cobranded experience

This is … weird. Ironically car makers are teased with a level of customization that has never appeared on an Apple product in this century, but it’s when working with Apple designers, and you apparently have to use SF? Wild proposition when no one wants to adopt it.

The next video on the architecture is also mystifying. It starts as a pitch to automakers that it’s not THAT much more complicated than CarPlay, and so customizable. Then you get to the various display elements that need to be composited from the vehicle overlays, punch through, remote UI synced to vehicle status, and the UI generated from assets delivered from the phone. The customization is that automakers can reimplement all their control logic with Apple UI elements.

What Is Going On With Next-Generation Apple CarPlay?

@joesteel “One of the drawbacks of existing CarPlay is that your navigation app can only display in the center console, and can’t provide directions in the instrument cluster in front of the driver, like built-in systems can.”

There must be some two-way comms being done by current CarPlay because our 2023 Ford Escape will show the next turn direction in the main instrument cluster.

@smackfu Sorry, I should have written that differently. I’m talking about the turn by turn navigation map that Apple demos. There’s only one display feed in current CarPlay. It can’t do a multi-display thing. Next Gen CarPlay solves that by taking over all the displays.
@joesteel ah yes, 100% agree
