Funny how people keep posting to substack and other people keep boosting those posts. "Funny" as in rewarding a platform that supports nazis. Might be worth taking a 2nd look at some of our "favorites" and wondering why they stay on substack. Equally why there are still any accounts on twitter... Guess supporting nazis doesn't bother some people...

Here’s what I wrote about that in response to a guy I follow who says pretty much the same thing

@[email protected] @[email protected] I’m so confused. I got off old Twitter when I saw the direction it was headed. But still a lot of folks I respect are still on there. I asked one guy why. He said that all his colleagues remain there, as do the majority of his followers. He said X remains the virtual commons. I know what you mean about supporting a platform that’s actively promoting antidemocratic disinformation. But also, if all the sane, rational voices leave, isn’t that making things even more polarized? A guiding principle all my life has been to meet people where they are. A lot of folks on X might finally have that Aha! moment when an important message presented in a novel way resonates, but only if not all the great teachers leave. I follow really smart folks like @[email protected] and @[email protected] on Mastodon and Substack, and I know Substack is criticized for various faults. But I think following smart folks and contributing to the conversation wherever it is can only be good.

@djembro As far as twitter, the argument is that's it's good to have voices of reason and morality in the nazi bar. Which I find completely unconvincing.

For substack, that argument doesn't work since it's not a virtual commons. The only argument -- one that no one ever admits to -- is that they find it personally advantageous & monetarily rewarding to publish there. And don't care about the consequences.

I don't think it's complicated. The problem is accepting what it says about people...

What if @anneapplebaum and @rbreich don’t know about the problems with Substack? Can it be that they simply don’t know? And #TimothySnyder? I don’t think any of these folks would knowingly support Nazis. Is this what’s going too happen with every platform?
