Hi folks. Planning to return soon.

I will likely be spinning up my own instance and migrating this account to it. My instance has been great but I'm wanting to run my own for complicated reasons related to being a content creator.

Hopefully your follow will automatically move and whatnot. If not, it's been fun. :P

What should my personal instance URL be?

(I will not necessarily abide by the results of this poll.)

social.linux.mom

linuxmom.com

linuxmom.net

One problem with `.mom` is that the registrar apparently doesn't have a set price for it, and I always worry they'll balloon my price if I "make it big". But maybe that's irrational? I don't know.
@vkc I always have this fear that if I search for a domain name on some registrar but don’t buy it, they’ll raise the price when I try to search for it later to actually buy it
@vkc mom-dot-net makes me think of the "Moms on the Net" video with technogeeks with spreadsheets πŸ˜…
@vkc oh that's an interesting and valid concern for scaling... Since you have a healthy network (unless it's last minute highway robbery) could you direct humans and machines (302) to a different domain?
@vkc My .dad domain is apparently "premium," which means it inexplicably costs a relatively obscene amount (but it was from the initial purchase, too). πŸ™„
@vkc What prevents you from pushing the "Veronica Explains" brand here? Would there be a significant amount of people who wouldn't find you if you didn't use some form of "Linux Mom"?
@reallyzen "VeronicaExplains" just looks too long to me on a handle. Plus I have those domains reserved for future SEO use, whereas the *linux*mom* options I already own and don't imagine using aside from the social context.

@vkc 100% not irrational.

What about linuxm.om?

@vkc I'm torn. The first is awesome and modern, the .net feels retro and comfortable.
@vkc linux.mom is a fantastic domain name. My vote is to go all-in on it
@vkc Why not just linux.mom? You can have that as the instance name (as in the server part of the username) while still having the actual instance hosted on a different DNS name. For example my instance is actually on social.treehouse.systems
@ilmari @vkc I’m adding another vote for this - linux.mom is perfect. If not that though, I’d go .net
@ilmari Does that work? I use `linux.mom/whatever` as a snappy redirect for a few longer URLs, so I guess I assumed my Mastodon would need to be entirely separated.
@vkc @ilmari I'm pretty sure that the handles on an instance, i.e. [email protected] do not have to match the URL of the web site, i.e. https://social.linuxmom.com. I'm not even sure the handle domain has to be real. I suppose it might be confusing if they *didn't* match though.
@vkc @ilmari Whoops, I didn't read the original post. I think I just said the same thing.

@ilmari @vkc

You can configure webfinger to have your handle just linux.mom and your instance address (for your access) social.linux.mom while you can use linux.mom domain for something else;

That1s what I have done. my instance is at social.harpia.red

Support Veronica Explains! – VKC.sh | Veronica Explains

@vkc I figure having "social." leaves the door open to host other services. Also owning linux.mom sounds pretty cool.
@vkc linuxmom.social? 😁
@vkc hot take but you could just subdomain your main site (the "we have domains at home" option)
@t54r4n1 I remember why I didn't consider it- my main domain is vkc(dot)sh and I didn't want to have vkc(at)vkc(dot)sh or some similar repeating problem. :/
@vkc I selected social.linux.mom, but a close second is linuxmom.com because I'm a sucker for a URL that rhymes.
@vkc If I were planning on sending email from the domain, then I would avoid novelty TLDs. In my experience they often have poor support on account creation pages. This is more true for TLDs with 4+ characters (.work, .info) but I'd probably avoid .mom for this reason too.
@vkc motherlypenguin? debianwitch? cobolgodess!
