i think when the usa collapses the process will look a lot less like rome and more like what happened with blockbuster video
@jk the last federal building will be in Bend, OR
@dvshkn a novelty for tourists, like when theres a giant shoe next to a highway
@dvshkn @jk knowing what i know about Bend, OR i can reliably assure you this speculation is precisely incorrect
@jk Can I quote you on that?
@jk just like blockbuster, the gift shop of the last remaining franchise location is going to be remarkable
@jk I think it will kick off the death of democracy and an explosion of autocracies globally, but I don't have any personal experience with Blockbuster to be able to tell if that's similar.
@kurt @jk This. πŸ‘† If it happens, the only remaining foci of power hate and violently repress democracy even harder. The blockbuster analogy makes no sense. There's a difference between the cultural landmark of a generation and the place where millions of ppl live and a government that holds most of the world's actually-working nukes.

@jk

People will make ersatz versions in their basements, much like previous generations made tiki bars in their garages?

@signalstation @jk someone will do it for free on the internet. america will try to make it illegal and fail, until someone does it not for free on the internet with a nice interface. and then that will blockbustify
@jk β€œHey, I found my old passport. Wanna go visit the last remaining state?”
@jk it'll hand grimly on, somewhere in Oregon? Or "... Making most of its income from merchandise"?

@jk

so 100 years from now there will still be some little piece of the USA left in a storefront somewhere.

@jk Well, I'll be there for it, then, because I have effectively DRM-free content on local media that'll last me the rest of my life and that I can share without Big Brother involvement.

It stands to reason there will be other vultures who will profit. To them, the collapse won't by any means look like collapse, it'll look like a lottery-win.

In other words, collapse is subjective.

@jk basically the setting of Snowcrash
@jk for sale: nukes (cheap)
@jk @mcc to be fair the decline of the roman empire (esp if including the post-rome period) is a lot more comparable to that of blockbuster video than people usually give it credit for
@jk You mean it will only have one location left, in Bend, Oregon?
@jk when the USA collapses the will be no Florida, miles of coastline swallowed by rising oceans, the nation's breadbasket will have been burned to the point it was dessert and Sagebrush was the main produce-most of humanity has moved to Canada-Americans who are in America are hungry, burnt and wishing they were dead-remembering the days of Trump and giddiness before everything changed from Hope to Doom
