The War on Cars: When Driving Is Not an Option with Anna Zivarts

The United States has built a transportation system centered around automobiles. But one-third of the nation’s population can’t drive, whether because of disability, age, financial hardship, immigration status, or any of a host of other factors. Those tens of millions of people are often invisible to planners and elected officials, and that’s why Anna Letitia Zivarts, herself a low-vision nondriver and a longtime activist for better transportation choices, has written a new book titled When Driving Is Not an Option: Steering Away from Car Dependency (Island Press). We talked with Anna about how, by designing our transportation future for those who can’t or don’t feel comfortable driving, we could build a system that works better for everyone and that would be more equitable, safer, and more environmentally sustainable. *** . *** This episode was sponsored by . Police need to be a DISTANT, back up to the way we handle safer streets.
Car design, limit distractions, block speeding from the car itself. Street design, discourage speeding, cam enforcement, block cell phones.
HOLD POLICE ACCOUNTABLE. Complete transparency of who is being pulled over and why. NO PHISHING. No smells of weed. No profiling. Calm traffic, enforce through cams. Cops are a distant back up but are needed.

"In 2022, cars killed 7,508 pedestrians, the equivalent of 18 fully-loaded Boeing 747s crashing with zero survivors. That means a pedestrian died roughly every 70 minutes, with no breaks in the tide of fatalities for weekends or holidays."

Pedestrian Deaths Are An Emergency. We Need To Start Acting Like It

With 7,500 pedestrian fatalities in America every year, we must consider the safety of people outside our cars with the same attention we give to occupants.

Biden,Congress fail to act on climate crisis! Where's the CarbonTax to shift people, corps to lower carbon products, services AND which would fund CO2 reduction initiatives? Where is the action reducing our addiction to fossil fuel, to personal cars? Where is our $$ & focus? funding more wars, more WarDept waste. &more bombs to annihilate Palestinian civilians. Destroying cities, invading nations isn't very climate friendly--if we set aside the war crimes, the suffering.

more traffic calming, raise all crosswalks. more speed cameras. we don't want police chases and enforcement, less speeding making it uncomfortable to speed makes everyone safer.
