We obtained an internal database of employee-reported privacy incidents at Google that shows the huge breadth of data it has and the run-of-the-mill and spectacular ways it mishandles it all the time

Google Leak Reveals Thousands of Privacy Incidents

An internal Google database obtained by 404 Media shows Google recording childrens' voices, saving license plates from Street View, and many other self-reported incidents, large and small.

Waze carpool’s feature leaked the trips and home addresses of other users.

huh

@404mediaco There is no company that tries to kill all the trust in Google other than Google himself. Fascinating.
@404mediaco And that's why I try to self-host all my data. Not like I have much to hide, but I don't like it spreading outside of my house either
@404mediaco you're sensationalizing Google attempting to fix their mistakes. Nothing you listed shows some sort of systemic issue OTHER THAN HAVING THE DATA IN THE FIRST PLACE.
Now I know why the reaction for Apple recording unsuspecting patients' private sessions with doctors was so muted just like Google recording children using a dedicated kids' mode - these can all be written off long as they're trying to ~fix~ it 🧐
@404mediaco In summary: several years ago, a massive corporation had a few inadvertent security incidents that affected next to nobody and, when discovered (by their own people, mind you), were immediately remedied. All this non-story does is whip up fear and mistrust when it is undeserved. But it's about the Big Bad Google, so it will get attention.

Daily reminder that... every single one of the companies (especially US companies) that has created extensive data profiles on you, absolutely does not give a damn about your privacy or protecting the data that they've collected

They only care about 'compliance' to the degree that investing in compliance minimizes fines when they get caught doing things that they should obviously know violate laws, social norms, or best practices.
