I'll switch away from Fedora (at least on this system) and try out more things. I plan to see PopOS, Solus and some non-GNOME desktops. It's been a while since I tried something else.

Usually I'm disappointed and go back to GNOME, as the sheer number of resources poured over to that desktop results in better outcome, but perhaps another project managed to steal the crown now?

Sadly Linux still lacks a really great desktop. We're closer than ever, but not there yet.

@zygoon I’ve always found KDE Plasma generally less visually appealing, but increasingly a rock solid and better engineered DE fwiw. Plasma 6 is a solid release, too.

That said I’m currently running Hyprland from β€˜main’ like an animal 😁

@jnsgruk Hyprland? :D

I just want something that doesn't break, doesn't have innovative features that require getting used to. I just want a boring desktop to do my interesting work.

KDE I always found cluttered and full of weird thigns I just didn't understand.

Perhaps I'm too old for this new stuff? Dunno.

@zygoon @jnsgruk i second what Jon said about KDE. I don't like its default looks, but I use it because it's rock solid and so much more stable than GNOME. KDE devs are also working on "gamer" features like HDR, which I'm excited about.

That said, due to my dislike of default KDE looks, I made my own theme, mostly inspired by macOS looks, but I think it ended up a bit GNOME-ish too. It has a dock and a launchpad instead of the default Windows-like menu and panel. However, I'm not 100% sure whether it works on Plasma 6 (I'm still on 5).

KDE is so customizable, that at the end, the default looks don't matter to me. πŸ˜…

@jnsgruk Wow, it does look nice. Thank you for sharing that.
@jnsgruk I tried it and let me just ask: is this a thing that only has the terminal and everything else I run from the terminal?
@zygoon it’s definitely something you have to invest time in. A bit like configuring i3 or sway. Worth the investment, though. I came to Hyprland after about 2 years on sway so a pretty easy transition :)

/me cries in MacOS and Windows ;-)

I'll read the website (it's shockingly nice!) and see what's there. No promises, let's see what I'll bring to the next sprint in six months :)

@zygoon here to support the KDE crowd πŸ™‚

I've been on KDE for years, now on v6 and I find it to be the right balance of acceptable defaults and flexibility.

I try Gnome every now and then (the greener grass, so pretty), but I find it unusable without a bunch of extensions, which make it more fragile. Vanilla KDE is flexible enough though. I also learned to accept the Breeze theme, the same way I learned to live with macOS GUI 😁
