YHWH said to Samuel, "Do everything the people request of you. For it is not you that they have rejected, but it is me that they have rejected as their king" (1 Samuel 8:7).

In the days of #Eli and #Samuel, #judges of #Israel, the #Philistines continued to oppress the #Israelites.

They even captured the Ark of the #Covenant for a moment but were compelled to return it by YHWH.

Eli's and Samuel's sons were not great authorities and exploited and oppressed the people.

And so Israel had enough: they wanted a king, a centralized authority like the nations around them. In so doing they were implicitly rejecting YHWH as their regent.

They got what they wanted: the tallest guy around, #Saul ben Kish of Benjamin, who was duly anointed as the first king of all Israel.

What were the Israelites looking for by asking for a king? Why was it understandable? What problems would attend to their request?
