We need to face up to the fact that the invasion of Ukraine was an act of war against liberal democracy. The left had largely bought into Francis Fukuyama's fantasy and the right deluded itself thinking that Thatcher-Reaganism could solve anything. Eastern Europe got neglected – and Putin noticed.
Now we're playing catch-up but things would have been worse without Biden's early reactions in late winter '22.
