50 billionaire families have spent $600 million+ on the 2024 elections, which is .06% of their total wealth.

The equivalent donation for an avg household would be ~$100.

This means 50 billionaires have the political-spending capacity of 6 million American families.

Oligarchy.

@rbreich

The ONLY way to stop this is to limit the amount a person can contribute during any one election & stop ALL company donations.

Then make EVERY Donation made open to the public.

@Mor696 @rbreich I don’t think people’s political donations should be visible to their employers.

@DrHyde @rbreich

And that becomes the excuse rich people use to allow them to do whatever they want.

@DrHyde @rbreich

Besides, if you do your job to the best of your abilities I highly doubt an employer will give a crap if you sent $100 dollars to a political organization

@Mor696 @rbreich I know I’ll be safe, partly because I work in a civilised place, but that is very much not the case for a lot of people in backward shitholes.
@Mor696 @DrHyde @rbreich I don't know Darcy, I had my job threatened for adding a Jolly Fish to my email signature, even though many at the corporate office included Bible verses in theirs. I have no doubt that if they knew I donated to a dem, I would have at least lost my position.
@rbreich We're screwed. We're not playing the same game.

@rbreich

But their donations mean that their wealth will be protected once their pets are elected!

Sounds like a great investment in corporate capitalism, maintaining the wealth gap and breaking the economy.

@rbreich Through Not our US Constitution but the US (So-Called) Supreme Court. And This is the result of so FEW American patriots in the Republican party. never before in my life have I observed such a nauseating group of congressmen
@rbreich
Federalist chief injustice Citizens united.

@rbreich
This is intriguing math. They buy off the system, and still have lots left over for their yahcts.

It's time for a new way.

@davevolek @rbreich We need to enlist more Orcas to sink more of their yachts.
@rbreich
I would venture to say that there are enough
fossil fools in those 50 billionaire families
to call it, legitimately, an oilagarchy
especially with Trmp's recent offer
to some of those very same fossil fools.
@rbreich As one of my managers used to say, "Stop bringing me problems and start bringing me *workable* solutions!"
@rbreich In this case, a workable solution is one that will pass both houses of Congress and get signed by the President in an election year. Otherwise, you're simply whinging.
Limitarianism: why we need to put a cap on the super-rich

In this extract from her new book, Dutch political philosopher Ingrid Robeyns proposes a three-pronged plan of action to tackle extreme wealth concentration and reduce inequality

@rbreich Is this why they bought “citizen’s United”from the Supreme Court?
