What do I think was missing from the book Architecture Modernization? Great question from @eduardodasilva yesterday as part of an interview that will be published soon.

While designing a great architecture, prioritizing areas with the most business impact, and having an effective migration plan are essential to get right, so are all of the small things that happen on a day to day basis.

Helping teams stay aligned to the vision and motivated, balancing modernization vs other work, changes in priorities, unexpected problems, uncovering new complexity, dependencies between teams...

..every day something is happening that might only affect the success of modernization by 0.1%, but over the course of a year or 3, dealing with those situations effectively could be the difference between achieving half or all of your modernization objectives and worth millions to your business.

This is covered in the book, notably the chapter on AMETs. But it's a great topic that I would love to have covered in much more detail - delivery management, change management, leadership etc. in the context of architecture modernization.

It will probably be the focus of future blog posts and talks (I'm definitely not writing any new books). I appreciate any recommendations for existing resources on the topic

Architecture Modernization Enabling Teams (AMET)

I co-authored this article with Nick Tune (article on Nick’s blog) based on our individual experiences and experiences and learnings from working together with clients. It touches on several topics we are actively writing, developing, and consulting on, in particular: Architecture Modernization, Team Topologies - Enabling Teams, and Architecture Topologies (AMET is an example of an architecture topologies’ pattern that we are observing as very effective to help approaching architecture modernization initiatives and architecture practices in an organization). We are going to be exploring this and related topics in future writings. 📣 Update 01/2024: check our new article on the series on Architecture Modernization Enabling Teams (AMET) here: Forming an Architecture Modernization Enabling Team (AMET)
