Team Topologies Academy
System architects (not necessarily their title) are responsible for leading system design -- emphasis on leading and on system and on design. It is challenging: these are consequential decisions with value network and sociotechnical impact. But it comes with the opportunity and scope to help engineering teams make a meaningful impact on business and engineering outcomes. This entails a shift in focus to system concerns, but is informed by and has major implications for the engineering teams.

Architecture Modernization with Nick Tune

In this episode, Thomas Betts talks with Nick Tune on how to know if to invest in an architecture modernization journey, what benefits you can expect to achieve, and how to measure the improvements.

InfoQ

This is covered in the book, notably the chapter on AMETs. But it's a great topic that I would love to have covered in much more detail - delivery management, change management, leadership etc. in the context of architecture modernization.

It will probably be the focus of future blog posts and talks (I'm definitely not writing any new books). I appreciate any recommendations for existing resources on the topic

Architecture Modernization Enabling Teams (AMET)

I co-authored this article with Nick Tune (article on Nick’s blog) based on our individual experiences and experiences and learnings from working together with clients. It touches on several topics we are actively writing, developing, and consulting on, in particular: Architecture Modernization, Team Topologies - Enabling Teams, and Architecture Topologies (AMET is an example of an architecture topologies’ pattern that we are observing as very effective to help approaching architecture modernization initiatives and architecture practices in an organization). We are going to be exploring this and related topics in future writings. 📣 Update 01/2024: check our new article on the series on Architecture Modernization Enabling Teams (AMET) here: Forming an Architecture Modernization Enabling Team (AMET)

Helping teams stay aligned to the vision and motivated, balancing modernization vs other work, changes in priorities, unexpected problems, uncovering new complexity, dependencies between teams...

..every day something is happening that might only affect the success of modernization by 0.1%, but over the course of a year or 3, dealing with those situations effectively could be the difference between achieving half or all of your modernization objectives and worth millions to your business.

What do I think was missing from the book Architecture Modernization? Great question from @eduardodasilva yesterday as part of an interview that will be published soon.

While designing a great architecture, prioritizing areas with the most business impact, and having an effective migration plan are essential to get right, so are all of the small things that happen on a day to day basis.

Eduardo da Silva was part of the team facilitating Bol.com’s evolution of its approach to #datascience from a standalone centralized practice to a core organizational discipline. They did this by leveraging #EnablingTeams and growing strategic #Platforms, which support their 100+ teams harnessing data science capabilities to build their many products.

Where could those 4 pages possibly go next? Welll.... right now they go to:

As an architect working in an AMET* your purpose is to help drive architecture modernization.

You can't do all of the work for all of the teams yourself, so how do you ensure each team is realising its full modernization potential?

Sometimes you need to help leadership establish a vision and strategy that inspires teams.

Sometimes you need to help teams better understand the bigger picture, vision, and priorities.

And sometimes....

...the best thing you can do is to help spread success stories....

....because often, the best inspiration comes from observing peers - seeing other teams in the same organization with similar constraints doing outstanding modernization work.

Enabling Thinking & Teams Articles Series

TL;DR: This is the first article of a series on Enabling Thinking & Teams. In it, I briefly frame this series and my motivations for writing it. Furthermore, I share my initial list of articles for the series (based on what I have been observing and learning on these topics). At the end of the article, I also have a link to a feedback form to gather insights on the topics I plan to cover and any other missing aspects.
