@rickscully @bhawthorne @rsf92 @pluralistic I wish #PortlandOregon could figure out how to own it's own fiber network. We are *stuck with terrible #Monopolies that pull over $350M out of the community every year. #PersonalTelcoProject pushed for #MunicipalBroadband studies about 6 years ago but the #Metro council and city have sat on their hands since then.

@sfunk1x @rickscully @bhawthorne @rsf92 @pluralistic We had the attempt at public WiFi years ago, before the company folded before it was even fully deployed. :-/

Which reminds me, I should up my donations to #PersonalTelcoProject...

@ehurtley @rickscully @bhawthorne @rsf92 @pluralistic Oh I remember vaguely. I seem to recall #PTP tried to get the city to support its effort, but they were ignored in the end and the city went with some fly by night company that - as you mentioned - eventually folded. Then PTP got all that hardware and started distributing it... At least that's how I remember it. I was working in downtown back then and remember bits of that.

Matches what I remember. I helped set up one of PTP's first nodes - and the first "public WiFi" that covered Pioneer Courthouse Square - back in 2000. My employer let us set one of our WiFi Access Points up in our PCS-facing office windows as a firewalled-off public one.

I also set it up with our (secured) corp WiFi reaching, too, then did a lot of work from the then-still-new PCS Starbucks. :-D
