I noticed a lot of books of late start with a quote or two which sets the tone, mood, and general vibe.
Q: What is the name of these quotes? Is there a term for such quotes at the beginning of novels which foreshadow something?

I think it's an "epigraph".
And having browsed the web I'm sure it is!

They can be at the beginning of books and even at the beginning of chapters. And it's not a new thing - I recently re-read Watership Down and every chapter has an epigraph. Not to mention poems, like T S Eliot's The Waste Land - epigraphs in Latin and Greek!
