The Problem’s Never the Hardware

Today's Apple event has come and gone, and in its wake are some new iPads, a slightly saner iPad lineup, and some questions. The biggest one for me is this: Does Apple know what the iPad actually needs? Right before debuting new iPad Pros, John Ternus said that Apple was "gonna crush the limits of [...]

Wait until WWDC I guess?
@ismh I mean, when the way that one of their biggest iPad advocates @viticci makes it usable for him involves using a hacksaw...
@techphotoguy @ismh @viticci Well, a figurative hacksaw (really just a set of torx screwdrivers and patience).
@ismh can’t even play two videos at the same time😭

@cmaciasjimenez @ismh Sure it can. I can play two videos at the same time on my iPad mini even:

@ismh the hardware refreshes will continue until the sales improve

@Kevin @ismh Unless that hardware refresh includes Face ID 🙃

You’re killing me, Tim.

@ismh to be fair, the software changes could come at WWDC. This really was just about new hardware.
@ismh I just compared my third-gen 11” Pro to the new one, and while I would *love* the OLED display, 22 grams and .6 mm are just not compelling enough reasons for me to switch when I know all the same usage frustrations/short-comings are still there. I know the hype meter will be as sky high as ever, but as an iPad-only user, I’m personally really disappointed.
@ismh Because facing the fact that the app-centric way of doing things is a failure in anything but phones would be a really bitter pill to swallow.
@ismh it's a device i have wanted to like for the longest time but i can't use it for anything, the hobbled OS makes it like a gritty sandpapery version of just about anything i would normally want to do on a computer
@chrisisgr8 @ismh The only thing I use it for is a (ProCreate) sketchpad. It's great at that! But saving the files? Sharing/transferring them? Pure clunkiness :|
@kjrsten @ismh yeah, like a while ago i wanted to see if i could open a psd that is on my nas in photoshop for ipad and i was impressed/glad that i could, but it was overwhelmingly clunky compared to using an actual desktop computer. it would have been smoother to use my ibook g4
@ismh iPadOS has always been in this “wait until next WWDC, it’ll improve!”- and it never really does 🙂‍↔️ they should have kept the iPad as an iPad, and not tried to turn it into a fake (expensive) MacBook
@ismh pretty sure we experienced this in 2018. The new Hardware seemed great but software was, even worse so, not in a position to leverage the A12
@ismh it makes me so sad. It’s literally my ideal form factor, but so difficult for me to use for anything other than media consumption and photo editing.
@ismh I just want a decent drawing tablet without spending like $3000
@spots1000 That’s why the 10th gen iPad exists for around ten times less than $3000!
@platkus But you can't have the second generation apple pencil on a non iPad pro model.
@spots1000 Of course you can. It works on iPad Air and iPad mini. I use one myself on my iPad mini.
@ismh
I really really wanted to like the 13” iPad Pro. I gave it my best shot but trying to get anything done on it still feels like trying to swim in a snowsuit. I use it for reading news, watching YouTube at the table and occasionally a quick, unimportant photo edit.
@ismh “Brent emphasized Stephen’s message”
@ismh counterpoint: Apple only knows how to improve iPad hardware, not software, so they're throwing raw power to an UI issue

@ismh It’s iPadOS, iPadOS is the problem, it’s iPadOS! 🤦‍♂️ 🤪

It doesn’t matter how much power or hardware upgrades Apple throws at the iPad platform. The operating system is fundamentally broken (especially on iPad Pro) and needs to be completely redesigned.

@ismh I don’t think Apple thinks that the iPad has a problem.
