I'm on my way to Detroit for @railsconf !!
I can't wait to see so many of my old friends and meet some new ones! I'm really excited about the program this year - speakers and the Hack Day, which I thought was fabulous at RubyConf last year.
This year I'm trying something different - volunteering! If you see me in my black RailsConf t-shirt, stop me and say hi! I'll answer any questions and help if I can!!
Off to a bit of a rough start. I left early for the airport, so of course there were no delays and no line for security. I found myself at my gate 2 hours early. In other news, I'll be carrying a new umbrella at @railsconf, so the rest of you don't have to worry about rain.
2 hours at the gate was enough time to finish a sleeve on my travel project, and just before boarding, I discovered I have two right sleeves.
Now at the end of the flight, I have half a left sleeve, and a mess of yarn.

I'm at Opal Grove Games, Aisha Blake's game store!! Just won a game of Patchwork - a 2 person quilting game! It's so nice to see her again!
Opal Grove does game rentals at $3.50/person/hour, or on Thursdays, they have unlimited rentals for $5/person!

I haven't shared this with many, but last year I had family members hospitalized or die the week before every event I attended. Many of you only know me when I'm putting on a brave face while mourning on the inside.
With this RailsConf being the penultimate one, I'm feeling the same way. I'm not ready for it to be over. 😭
At least this time, we're all feeling it together? Let's give each other a bit of grace, and do our best to make the most of the time we have left!

I loved @kaspth's talk on riffing! Riffing is a design strategy where you build semi-functional code in a single file in order to figure out the code feel of your design without heavily investing in tests, migrations, or checking documentation for implementation specifics.
Huge props for 2 live demos in this talk, one of which featured audience participation!!
I left @inazarova's talk incredibly excited about how Rails encourages startup success by making it faster and easier to ship features!
This talk was all about fresh new start-ups that are using Rails.
One of my favorite things to do is say, "That's a Rails app, by the way" when talking about various tools, and Irina's given me 20 new ones!
Tomorrow is the day I'm most excited about! Hack day at RubyConf San Diego last year was my favorite part of the conference, and I've been looking forward to @john's keynote since I found out about it!

Having the opportunity to meet and work with maintainers is a grounding and inspiring experience. But if it's not for you, there's a typical hackathon experience with pitch party, birds of a feather to meet like-minded folks, and workshops for a guided experience!!
RailsConf 2024 is the world’s largest gathering of Rails developers, brought together to further discussion and learning about building, managing, and testing Rails applications. With a specific focus on Rails, conference topics can range from new users to administration to advanced techniques.
One of my favorite things is listening to incredibly smart people share their passion and explain their thoughts and projects. @john delivered today!!
His love and passion for performance and Vernier is infectious, and his explanations around profiling and all the problems and solutions you encounter was both thorough, and clear and accessible!!
I love the Hack Day concept so much!! I chose to volunteer this year, and it's so heartwarming to see maintainers who haven't worked in person have that opportunity, first-time contributors to projects, and have a dedicated space to open-source!
@rubycentral has done a really good job of highlighting this space and opportunity!
Day 1's news was tough to hear, but I'm slowly processing and accepting it. Listening has really helped.
Most conferences are organized yearly. @rubycentral has one every 6 months. This short planning process on the Ruby community's biggest conferences is tough on event organizers, but also means @rubyconf and @railsconf have become the same conference with slightly different focuses.
I'm thinking about this as a consolidation that will help @rubycentral put together more polished events.

This talk by @dodecadaniel was so cute and fun!! Bug R Caterpillar was running into a lot of issues with database transactions!
My favorite tip might be `after_create_commit` which will become obsolete in Rails 7.2.
I really appreciated hearing from @rubycentral about the changes and respect them for having an open forum to discuss these changes and the future.
Big themes included needing funding, taking action on more initiatives with only one conference per year, and reaching out to other language foundations and organizations in the Ruby space.
