What's stopping us? - Lemmy.World

Maybe this was why Trump wanted to buy Greenland lol
Someone made an animation without the ice, looks like not much actual land.
Interestingly, lack of land.
Do we really need all these mountains?
We will as the sea levels rise. Displacing more water will also NOT help…
No, no, you don’t understand. It’s not displacing, it’s replacing. Less water, more land.
Ah yes, the alchemical art of literally transmuting H2O into SiO2 that everyone knows.
We will just put salt on the water so it dries up

Just put it where the mountains used to be in a mountain shaped container.

Easy.

Put the spare water into orbit, where it’ll freeze and give us rings like Saturn!

Omg let’s do that anyway

kepler syndrome go brrrrrrrrrrr :3

especially what with our big beautiful moon, a ring system at an orbit high enough to not immediately endanger any craft we send up would be destabilized into an unrecognizable state very quickly… which would send a good bit of its debris down into dangerous altitudes close to earth x_x;

maybe what we need to do is turn luna into a ring system…?

You can suck all these water into your head. Lol
It’s actually not quite as crazy as it sounds. OK, it is crazy, but hear me out. Some inventor (Wolf Hilbertz) tried to build an island in the middle of the the Mediterranean Sea through electrical mineral deposition on a metal frame. There’s a fascinating video essay on its attempted construction and failure on YouTube.

It seems you put the Wikipedia link twice
Should be fixed now! Thanks for the heads up!

You could also destroy mountains and use the rubble to expand the coast.

It’s really fucking stupid, but it would technically work.

Technically you could dig a huge hole, that would work too lol
Wouldn’t there be a lot of displaced water that needs to go somewhere?
Basically every coastal city in the US has significantly added to their land by doing exactly this (obviously far less…)
Boston is a crazy example or this. Original Boston is so insanely different than what’s currently there. It’s like 75% of the damn city used to be ocean lol

we get the dirt from the Moon

the Moon dirt will be even closer to the ocean when it’s under it instead of over it, so the tides will work even better

By God, it’s foolproof!
I mean, we probably could, but it’d be immensely expensive and also why?

An island is just a bit of dirt that sits above the sea level. Imagine what would happen if you scraped all that dirt into the ocean. Do it for every continent now. Well, the entire world is under water now. Oops.

Where is all this dirt going to come from?

Clearly never been to Boston
Couple Dutch engineers will get that sorted for you no problem.
Definitely, they could just drain it like they drained where I live.
It would work better on the west coast, tbh.
Hold on y’all, we -justyoulistenhere- get a bunch bulldozers and push them dirt into the water, just like Ja-apan did right? And get this! Then there’s MORE AMERICA!
Sell these houses to who, Terraman?
I know there are a lot of complete morons out there, but this has to be someone fucking around, right? A little old school trolling just looking for a reaction. Right?
Who knows anymore.
Reverse Turing Test + Dead Internet. If you’re comment is stupid enough to be mistaken for a bot, are you really human?
Why school bus? Is there a deeper joke here than just sinking a school bus? English is not my primary language…
they’re telling them to go to school
Ok, thanks. My thought process was like ā€œIs land also another word for student?ā€
This is white people twitter, our jokes aren’t the funny or creative, unfortunately.
Imagine giving Elon Musk money so you could tell that joke.
As a Dutch I don’t understand this joke

Ask your german friend about the logistics and they’ll probably already have a slideshow ready to explain it.

If you’re lucky they might have an extra about their vacation to Spain!

After reading through the comics it could also be related to climate change but what first came to mind was the american housing crisis. Some people seem to think that the housing crisis could be solved by having more room for houses while, how I understand it, it is actually not a problem of available living space but a problem of affordable living space.
A simple map of population density across the US should clearly show that lebensraum is not the problem indeed. It’s more a question of places that are both desirable for the opportunities they offer, while being affordable.

lebensraum

Is this a loanword?

By far the best website in the world for over 20 years now, I hope it never dies or enshittifies.
Zombo.com - No Limits - You Can Do Anything

Zombo.com where you can do anything. Zombocom has no limits. Zombo is unlimited.

I’m swiss german and Lebensraum is a word, which is why i asked. Who knew there’s some nazi concept associated with it.

I don’t think it’s a loanword as such, hence my italicising it. I was using it as a reference to the nazi.
Yup, learned of that after.
As an American I’m baffled also
Looks like everyone is missing your joke.
The joke is that we have more land to the north so we don’t have to. We can just invade Canada before we start with polders
I thought you already did that in June 2072?
Half of it would be The South, though.
As in, it the South would literally have to rise?

I mean of we just blew up the Appalachia’s that oughta get us the materials required

Gonna have to put the water somewhere though, I vote right onto Texas because fuck Texas.

Fun fact, Appalachian has some of the world’s oldest mountains, older than the atlantic ocean, the Scottish Highlands are part of the Appalachian range.
Kinda funny considering how it was mostly scots who ended up settling the mountains during colonization.
