#wkcr is reporting that they have been locked out of their station. They are playing a prerecorded message relayed in by a remote computer.

They are supposed to be covering the arraignment of arrested #ColumbiaUniversity protestors this morning but have no access to their equipment or station.

They are generously referring to this lockout as a mistake by #columbia and not an attempt to shut down their #journalism coverage.

Need to keep an ear on them today.

UPDATE:: see post below

They were scheduled to begin coverage at 8am.

But 3 reporters’ IDs were deactivated - folks who were part of the 10 preapproved wkcr folks who went through prescreening yesterday.

Dean Cristen Kromm generously let them in a few hours later by manually opening the door from the inside

They still have no swipe access to their space, delaying all reporting. They need 24/7 in person coverage to have someone inside to open the door. The only other time this happened was during the Covid lockdowns

#wkcr is currently interviewing a person who was arrested at #columbia

The facilities worker who has claimed to have been held hostage - was asked to leave- but he didn’t want to go, according to the interviewee. Will have to see if they release the video of that encounter.

#wckr #columbia #protestor interview

After the protestors used tools to barricade themselves in
#HamiltonHall they intentionally left all tools in a hardware room so that there would be no misconception about them being armed.

They sat in a row and waited, disoriented and passively after the flash bang bombs #nypd used.

The protestors were kicked and brutalized by police as they were arrested.

Definitely need to see the full video

#columbiauniversity Shafik found this behavior professional

#wckr #columbia protestor says that the outside agitator accusation is untrue.

The majority of folks in #HindHall were current CUID holders, mostly students and/or recent alumni or otherwise with working #ColumbiaUniversity ID badges.

Sounds like there were a few that did not have cuid, but those folks had been in the encampment from the beginning. (And student protestors thus saw them as part of the community not outsiders.)

#wckr #columbia protestors were told they were being arrested for a felony. (Felony Burglary in the 3rd degree levied by #nypd ; some felony assault charges etc.)

They were not read #miranda rights.

And then (to their surprise), at arraignment, these were changed to misdemeanors (trespassing in the 2nd) by the ADAs district attorneys

#wckr today reported that of the 44 #columbia #HamiltonHall arrestees, 31 were students or affiliates.

I’ve been feeling extreme sadness today.

#nypd remain occupying #ColumbiaUniversity today

They have kept up their kettling barricades

A cop in an unmarked car nearly doored me on my commute home. So apparently they aren’t at campus to keep their heads on a swivel (or idk maybe it was on purpose)— just hanging out to collect overtime and lord over the campus they’ve been paid to conquer

@atthenius JFC, how hard a dooring? I've had it happen a couple times, and even when you're not actually hurt, your brain is all WTF? for a minute.

@roadskater He threw his door fully open into me just before 114 street so I had to brake hard and swerve.
And then I realized that there was a giant truck right there in the next lane, and I should probably just have run into him.

Yes— it did mess with my head. Thankfully, the vast majority of my commute is on the HRG.

@atthenius The DA did a big “NOPE” to trying dozens of flimsy felony charges and all the extra work that would entail. God bless paperwork, I suppose.

Btw, “Assistant District Attorney” or ADA is the full job title for NY state prosecutors

@eccentric_econ yes. Paperwork I guess saved the day.

I wasn’t sure if ADA alone was too jargony for non US followers — you’re right about that title

@atthenius The modified Miranda said police don't need to read people their rights unless people ask for them to be read. Has that changed?
@steter I don’t know — I’m not a lawyer. Naively I thought the point of Miranda is you’re told your rights whether you ask to be or not. The student being interviewed dwelled a long time on this point.

@atthenius Okay, I had to look it up. I had it wrong.

What was changed was that you can't sue if they didn't read you your rights, and the acquired information was used against you anyway. So, it's still applies, but more weakly.
