The #carbon intensity of #electricity generation in #Scotland is almost zero.

At times, it is.

Britain's Carbon Forecast

We did this in <10 years.

#Scotland is wet, mountainous and windy. So mostly we rely on wind and hydro.

Nuclear still kicks in at peak demand, from an ageing nuclear power station at Hunterston, on the Ayrshire coast.

But in summer, on a sunny day, #solar can be 10-12% of the mix.

Hunterston is on its last legs though. On its knees, almost.

It will need to be decommissioned soon.

So we will have to figure out a way of running our entire grid off renewables, 100% of the time, in the next 5 years.

I'm not an electrical engineer, so I don't fully understand the challenges in that.

From what I do understand, they are formidable.

But we have shown that they are solvable.

In the next 5-10 years, #Scotland's electricity generation network will be 100% #carbonfree at source, all the time.

Yes, there is still #carbon embodied in the creation and installation of these turbines and solar panels.

Yes, there is a fuck-ton of social injustice in the mineral extraction from the Global South.

And yes, there are a thousand other problems with all this shit.

But if we pick one fight at a time, and focus on it, we can make change happen.

All of it needs to change, but our home is on fire.

The first, the immediate priority needs to be: stop fuelling the flames.

#Prioritise #Organise #Agitate

And the @isleofeigg shows us how to do it.
