This is fantastic. If you’ve got the Rabbit apk launcher plz share with me christina at christina dot is. This is hilarious. https://www.androidauthority.com/rabbit-r1-is-an-android-app-3438805/
Rabbit R1, a thing that should just be an app, actually is just an Android app (Updated)

The Rabbit R1 is an AI-powered, handheld gadget that seems to run Android under the hood and is powered by an Android app.

Android Authority
@film_girl fun fact, the ai pin also runs on android lol 🤡
@b3ll of course it does! We’ve got limited budgets and need to design custom charging cables and wireless charging battery extenders. Or we need to pay Teenage Engineering to shit out a rejected Playdate prototype. We don’t have money for custom Linux runtimes! AOSP is the new Busybox is a thing I legit wrote a decade ago.

@film_girl it’s pretty true tho

Also, dying, “rejected Playdate prototype”

@film_girl @b3ll #Playdate is great fwiw.
@zjp @b3ll I’ve been enamored with it since I first played one at xoxo in 2019. I was part of the first batch of orders. I love it so much.
@film_girl @b3ll it took too long to receive mine honestly but I use it with the kids when out and about and forced to be somewhere they would pine for a phone or tablet.
@film_girl @b3ll I mean really, who would be crazy enough to write their own OS!?! 😅
@cabel @b3ll people who don’t half-ass hardware! So it’s basically you guys and Valve (Valve counts because yes they use Linux as fhe base for SteamOS but they delivered Proton and built the entire custom UI. And before people try to claim Valve got Proton from Wine, yes. They had a base to start with. They then invested the resources to actually make Wine good in the modern era and they do patches on the weekly to fix game quirks)
@film_girl @cabel yeah, whole-heartedly agree! Proton is it's own wild psuedo operating system (which sometimes runs better than Windows itself), and Playdate OS is wholesome (and now runs wipeout??) 😍
@cabel @film_girl @b3ll so I just got by Rabbit R1 today. I bought it cause it’s adorable and I figured I could probably stick Linux on it (surprise it’s already on it I guess) buuuuuut how about Playdate OS?? 😊
@cabel @film_girl @b3ll at least they didn’t write their own browser

@film_girl

The headline should be:
Rabbit, the hardware that shouldn't have been an app.

@film_girl it’s an AI Juicero
@film_girl Introducing the Rabbit R1. The $200 incomplete AI app on a seperate unneeded Android device
@film_girl
great they didnt mention a single time about the underthehood OS, also how nice everything literally is running Android now lmfao
@film_girl
@gruber said he ordered one.
@JoeBeam @gruber oh, I’ve got one! I wanted the apk
@film_girl @gruber
There I go again, not listening.
@film_girl well this would totally fit with the automations being Playwright scripts doing some sort of budget zapier like actions. It’s “quality” all the way down!
@film_girl Their whole pitch is that they would be controlling apps with AI under the hood, of course they're running Android?
@outadoc I mean, the AI isn’t client side and I don’t expect these types of companies (read: hype driven) to take on the task of building their own OS or anything. But the fact that someone extracted or got a hold of the apk and it worked on a phone (apparently they fixed some stuff so prob not anymore) is hilarious.
@film_girl I certainly appreciate running stuff that looks like custom low-level iPod-like software on a regular-ass phone 😁
I'm not sure how else they would have been running existing apps though, apart from expensive server-side emulation, so I guess I'm not too surprised on that end
@film_girl it wouldn’t even be a popular or good app.
