I'm working on converting my shed into my woodwork shop, it's not a huge shed but my work stuff is taking up SO much of my garage...

I really need to work on moving stuff over today but god I'm so sleepy today...but we're about to have a week of thunderstorms so I really should do it today.

I don't have power to the shed but I use hand tools 99% of the time and most of my power tools are battery operated. I mostly need power for lights and a fan/small heater depending on the temperature. I don't have a big budget for this project so right now my plan is:

- I've ordered a cheap solar light fixture, with its own dedicated battery and panel. Mostly because my budget is tight now and this will get me up and running, it's so dark out there. That should be here today.

- Buy a portable power bank, like a camping style one (since they're under $200). I don't need to power too many things so I think this would be sufficient for the amount of hours I'd need it to run a fan and maybe a sander or on rare occasions a miter saw for small amounts of time.

- Buy a solar panel for the power bank. The power banks I've looked at so far all have solar ports AND can be charged from the mains so I can charge it in the house until I have panel money saved up. Ideally I can put the panels on the roof of the shed, there's tons of sun there (that's why my garden is also next to the shed lol)

I've looked into some more DIY solar solutions for sheds but the portable bank also has the appeal of being able to use it if the power goes out, and that does happen a few times a year from storms. Luckily I do also have the in bed outlet on my truck but then anything I want to power has to be near the truck lol. And the last place I want to be if a winter storm takes the power out is in the basement next to the garage.

@lori My dad swears by small solar panels and LED lights for his worksheds prior to running electric to it.
@thegpfury the shift to LED lighting is a godsend here because we need so much less power for lights now lol

@thegpfury I may get power run to it sometime but right now I don't wanna tear up the yard or spend that kind of money.

I'm vaguely considering solar for the house but I definitely don't have the budget now. I'm just thinking about it and doing some investigating to know how much it would cost me eventually. I get a lot of sunlight where I am and my roof is pretty much perfectly positioned for sun. Even if it was just to cover part of my energy use it'd be nice.

@lori not sure how far your shed is but it’s clearly@in battery dragging distance. So maybe a couple 100ft extension cords and save the money to put towards solar panels/battery on your house for power outages someday?
