TIL my state Senator Scott Wiener is sponsoring an Orwellian bill to crack down on pro-Palestine campus protests in California. Unfortunately it sailed through its first two committees almost unanimously. Send a letter to oppose #SB1287 here:

Save Students' Right to Protest - NO on SB 1287

@scott On reading the bill, I see Sec 1(b)(10)(B)) finds that "participants" did "Call for or support genocide, as that term is defined by the 1948 United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (Genocide Convention), whether that genocide is aimed at protected groups specified in the Genocide Convention, or aimed at protected groups specified in Section 51 of the Civil Code."

And then calls for policies to prohibit that. Given the reference to the Genocide Convention's definition of "Protected Groups", this should apply to expressing support for the #NetanyahuAdminstration 's policies (which are a continuation of the "conservative" Israeli government policies in a more aggressive manners.)

I suspect the sponsors really haven't mapped out the implications of the bill. A "shocked, shocked to find" once again.

@PaulWermer it’s incredibly vague on purpose. Administrators will not enforce it in the way you’re suggesting

@scott well yes - unless students are organized enough file complaints about statements in support of Israel's genocidal actions & proclamations when they occur.

And given senior ministers advocating removal of Palestinians, there's a lot to flag.

My worry is that some students are a little too worked up and will continue to make the mistakes of advocating against Israel as a state w/in the UN defined borders
