My town lets you request street trees be planted anywhere you can keep an eye on them and water if needed. I am responsible for four trees on my block, and just requested three more. It's great to know that I'm literally throwing shade.
@danielpunkass tossing foliage around doesn’t sound responsible
@danielpunkass That's great! - in my city we can apply for funds for greenery & the coop I live in did & used it for, well, this 😋 we just decided to do it again this year...
@danielpunkass Yeah, that works some places. Other places the residents say "what the fuck do we pay our taxes for if you're asking us to do the work?". And in yet other places residents plant stuff without bothering with asking for permission.
@danielpunkass meanwhile, the state is in charge of the medians where I live (VA), and they won't plant trees upon request. If *I* want to plant trees, I need to have them covered by liability insurance and sign a form saying I'm responsible for them, their maintenance, and any damage they cause for as long as they live. ... So, no trees for me. :(
@danielpunkass That's great, indeed! Can you choose, which trees they plant? E.g. if they plant chestnuts or plums, you might not only throw shade, but also feed the neighborhood in no time.
@levampyre in this case you can’t generally chose which tree, but I suppose if you knew the right people…
@danielpunkass Well, get to know them then, I'd say. I have planted lots of edible trees and shrubs in my forest garden over the past 4 years. I hope, to have a surplus of fruit and nut yield one day and not having to worry about food prices so much anymore.
@danielpunkass
That's so cool! I left a note in some neighbours' letterboxes letting them know that street trees are free and what the benefits are, and the lady down the road showed up to give me a lecture on why she doesn't like trees 🥲
@3TomatoesShort what the hell!
@danielpunkass
She'd had a bad experience because there were some unsuitable trees on her verge when she bought the block & she incurred a lot of costs etc, and unfortunately she wasn't willing to talk to the council about more suitable options :(
@3TomatoesShort It's a very unlikely grudge to hold!
@danielpunkass As well as storing CO₂! 👏
