So.. it turns out Dad wasn't actually intentionally cranking the bass while I was playing games on the weekend with a friend…

The subwoofer's integrated plate amplifier was slowly getting louder in recent months. By tonight, the volume knob had no effect at all, max gain, shaking the bedroom door at gentle music volume.

I'm used to amps dying by getting weaker or stopping, such as the amp that was in this sub previously. This is the first time I've had one be "NO, I will not go quietly into that dark night."

(Maybe the amp is easily fixable, and if not at least it's replaceable within the subwoofer. Yay for standards and serviceability!)

@digitalfox Honestly, just imagining an amp getting louder and louder as it's dying is super funny. Never heard of one doing that until now haha

My roommate has something similar where the car radio is going bad, but it shows it by turning the dial into russian roulette: I can dial correctly, or jump an extra volume, or two, or five, or even ten.

@Dreamline Yeah, it is weird. It might be related to using the speaker level inputs rather than the line level inputs… I'll look into it sometime soon.

And ah, fun! I have a surround sound home theater amp I picked up for cheap at a garage sale that does the same thing - and sometimes turning the volume knob up turns the volume down, or vice-versa…
