Just finished reading Animal Farm for the first time in my life. It was good, I guess, but almost exhausting in its lack of subtlety for metaphor and allegory. I suppose that's why you read it and learn about it in high school.

Should I watch the old movies of it? Gollum directing one for next year, too: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animal_Farm_(upcoming_film)

1984 is next! Never read nor seen.

@jw haven't read those since highschool but remember liking 1984 a lot more
Julia review: A brilliant, devastating sequel to Nineteen Eighty-Four

Sandra Newman's sequel to the classic dystopian novel, told from the perspective of the woman at the original's heart, is doubleplusgood – not least because it reminds us how relevant George Orwell's dark vision of the future still is, says Sally Adee

@jw I read 1984, I liked it but I found the writing kind of bare (I'm not sure it means what I think it means), in my opinion, it lacks the little things that make you submerge yourself into a book. But it is also very likely this was because this is not my first language
@Xzan @jw It's literally 1984. But I agree it reminded me of Asimov and other older sci fi with good premises, and world building, but thin characters and dialog.
@jw 1984 is much better and it inspired a ton of sci-fi (and Chinese government). Also check out the movie "Brazil" by Terry Gilliam. It's loosely based on 1984 https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088846/
@nurkiewicz I saw it about 20 years ago but don't remember much. Will do a rewatch, thanks!
@jw You _should_ watch the old movie. I liked the book way more... but then I'm not a big fan of musical adaptations.
@jw Totally agree about the lack of subtlety in Animal Farm (probably the same in film versions, I think I've only seen one but it was similarly unsubtle). 1984 is little more cheerful but has a lot more to say about what a totalitarian state is, what it regulates and how, etc.
@jw I don’t think he was trying to be subtle :-) lots of people like his essays. “Politics and the English Language” is the best known.
@jw you should watch Gilliam's "Brazil" after reading or watching 1984. It was clearly inspired by Orwell, but it's such a great movie.
@mark I saw it probably 20 years ago but don't remember much. Will give it a rewatch!
@jw I also prefer to (re)read the documentation just when it's relevant.
