@thomasbeagle I suspect this depends very heavily on whether you find a sweet/savoury combination tasty or nauseating. I fall into the latter category.

@DMakarios I was at a party once, and one American was explaining to another that "NZers classify their food as either savoury or sweet" and the other said "Ooooh" as if this finally explained something to them.

@thomasbeagle @DMakarios Was just talking about how Korean snacks don't seem to have a distinction between sweet and savoury. I love playing snack roulette in the Asian store.

@essjax @thomasbeagle @DMakarios riffing on that, I just finished some Korean garlic bread almonds. Sweet almonds, with savory garlic bread croutons (but also sweet?!). Delicious.

@thomasbeagle Additionally perplexing for Americans is that we classify pumpkin as savoury. While this is technically dubious, it allows us to include pumpkin with the other roasted veges.

Oddly, although pies and pumpkin are both savoury, we still don’t have pumpkin pie.

@thomasbeagle Yeah, carrots are sweet. They’re versatile, but you wouldn’t hire them for a savoury job.

@isaacfreeman @thomasbeagle I feel there are certain foods that are neutral in themselves and can pair with either sweet or savoury. Bread is the obvious example, but pumpkin, carrots, and peanuts also.

@DMakarios Bread is definitely neutral. Pumpkin and carrots have weak valence, but I would argue that they’re slightly savoury and sweet respectively. You wouldn’t normally have carrots with gravy, nor pumpkin in a cake.

I mean… I literally had a slice of pumpkin cake yesterday, but I’m very cosmopolitan and enjoy foreign cuisine.

@isaacfreeman @thomasbeagle I usually include carrots when I'm doing a roast, and I definitely include gravy.
Mind you, I usually choose big chunky carrots, not the sweeter juveniles. (And I make no claims to normality).

@DMakarios yeah but you can point out that most savoury things have sugar in the sauce, and most sweet things have a pinch of salt.
