Back in the mists of time, I often got sent out to find out what was causing the Mysterious Error, and just like so many of these tales, you never solved them by wielding a logic analyser or whatever; you just wandered around watching what people were doing for a couple of days until the missing links in the causal chain became clear.
In the meantime ofc the managing director would be shouting down the phone at my boss "HE'S JUST SITTING THERE DRINKING TEA AND LOOKING AROUND!!"
