Introducing linkblocks, the Federated Bookmark Manager

Rafael Epplée
@raffomania This looks interesting. I've been hoping someone would create something like old del.icio.us; you don't happen to remember that bookmark manager, do you?

@raffomania closely following this!

To be clear, there are no federation features built in so far, right?

Are you planning to open a chat room for it soon? At least having Discussions enabled on github would be nice; I have some ideas to share 💡

@erlend Yes, there are no federation features yet. I want to get the UX right and shape the federation mechanics following that UX.

I'll enable github discussions, I think that's a good starting point to gather ideas, it makes topics a little easier to find than a chat room.

@raffomania nice! I might suggest trying to fork or make a plugin for Wallabag or NextCloud Bookmarks: not because new things aren't good and fun and easy but because there's a vibrant ecosystem of existing self-hosted open source bookmark stuff (including browser plugins and mobile apps) you can take advantage of
@wilbr Yes. I looked into all the alternatives in-depth, and really tried to find someplace my vision would fit in. But the fundamental data model for linking bookmarks and lists is already so different from all other projects I've found that forking something would probably result in a more or less complete rewrite :/
@raffomania I love this idea. Came across it on lobste.rs and thought it was great.
@raffomania this sounds a LOT like a concept that I've been trying to wrap my head around, basically what if we had a federated search network seeded off of our bookmarks? A way to combat SEO slop using social connections
@raffomania intrigued to explore. So noted is a future feature, like including a description? I’ve bookmarked from furl through del.icio.us to pinboard and descriptions are crucial for me.
@cogdog Yes! A previous version already contained notes for bookmarks, but I wanted to improve it so you could link from a single bookmark to multiple notes and vice-versa, so I ripped it out. If you have thoughts on how it should work, I'm all ears!

@raffomania I can only speak from a user perspective. I guess I could see the bookmark title and link as like the Mastodon Post, and any notes perhaps attached like a reply, with options to have that public/private.

For more I want to have reliable search on my own bookmarks, which I do not have in Mastodon (search is a challenge).

@cogdog Having replies on the post is a pretty neat idea. That makes them individually boostable as well.

I'm currently working on search, that will be ready soon :)

@raffomania I cant see changing from my current process of managing my bookmarks in Pinboard (or rainddrop or equivalent), but I can see this as maybe a means of discovery.

I have 14000+ bookmarks accrued since 2004 ;-)

@cogdog We're planning to build importers for common bookmark managers, so you could also use it to publish some of your bookmarks on the fediverse :)
@raffomania Thanks for responding! I'm game to be a tester.
