Alison's Halo - Eyedazzler (1992-1996)

Dubbed "Beautiful Noise” music (aw, c'mon folks, it's mostly shoegaze), these folks didn't last long, despite clear talent.

This collects basically all their output on two LPs. Lots of good stuff beyond the one track that was on Still in a Dream.

(Allmusic compares the vocalist Catherine Cooper to Liz Fraser, and I think they couldn't be more wrong…)

@dnanian music press had a habit of comparing all shoegaze acts with female leads to Cocteau Twins or, less so, The Sundays' Harriet Wheeler. and every grungy band with a female lead sounded like Liz Phair. the slim selection of female leads to compare to may say something about the industry as a whole between 80-2000s.

@buru5 Amusingly, the same review also mentioned Rachel Goswell and Hope Sandoval, so basically the same ballpark.

But - she's really not like any of them. She's a tad flat, just a half-or-quarter-tone sometimes, and her melodies are nothing like the others…certainly not Wheeler or Fraser.

Anyway - I get that reviews (especially contemporary ones) are trying to compare to things people know - but gah - so far off…
