PostgreSQL maintainer Simon Riggs has died in a small airplane crash, on Tuesday.

For those who didn't know Simon, he's responsible for PostgreSQL Binary Replication and many big data features. He and I worked together at Greenplum 2006-2008. Postgres would not be the world-leading DB it is today if it weren't for him.

Duxford Airfield plane crash victim is named as pilot Simon Riggs

The Air Accident Investigations Branch is opening a case, examining the fatal incident.

In lieu of a wake, let me tell a funny story about Simon. He flew out to San Rafael while we were both working at Greenplum, for us to work together to implement Greenplum's resource management system. He'd never spent much time in the US before, and had never been to a chain restaurant before.

San Rafael being what it is, our first night there the partners took us out to a CA chain restaurant that pretended to be a French bistro ... (1)

... but, being a CA chain, had a tequila bar, which was Simon's first taste of tequila (IIRC, he didn't like it). More, the servings were HUGE as is usually the case at these US chains; Simon's steak frites was probably 11oz of beef with a quart basket of fries. Simon ate barely 1/3 of it.

Now, to understand what happened next, know that in British English the word "box" is also slang for a woman's genitals ... (2)

... and the British, as a rule, don't do to-go portions from a restaurant.

So, when it was clear he wasn't eating anymore, the petite, attractively dressed woman server came over to him and asked "Do you want to put it in a box?"

"DO I WANT A WHAT?!?!!?" roared Simon.

The server yelped, dropped the plates on the table, and fled.

We explained things to Simon, made our apologies (and a big tip) the server ... (3)

... After that, "box" became a standing joke at Greenplum; whenever the onsite meetings bogged down, someone would remark "maybe we should put it in a box."

Greenplum's initial SW/HW product offering was nicknamed "Big data in a box".

So, if you knew Simon, tonight raise a shot glass of tequila to him and toast one of Postgres' most brilliant developers ... and one who knew how to find the humor in surprises. (4/fin)

@fuzzychef thanks for that story. May your memories of him always be warm.
@fuzzychef what a fun story. Sorry for your loss.
@fuzzychef Thanks for sharing this story and sorry for your loss. He visited p2d2.cz/pgconf.eu conference at Prague maybe more than 4 times as speaker. So i will remember him as someone, who put a huge effort into sharing his enthusiasm for PostgreSQL with community. I was lucky enough to get one book with his signature. So i will store the book in the "box" and open it at least once per year. David from LinuxBox.cz
@fuzzychef huh I have never heard this term. Maybe it's a regional thing
@http_error_418 @fuzzychef It was common in the Midwest in the 50s and 60s and maybe beyond.
It probably extended beyond the Midwest...I do know this song resulted in a bunch of off-mic hilarity when I worked in radio
After reading the lyrics, it is plain to see he meant what Simon meant.

@fuzzychef sorry for your loss, and for the loss of a great maintainer ❤️

@fuzzychef I'm the product owner of a scientific computing project using PostgreSQL as our DB.

Now I want to find a way to sneak in a reference to boxes of tequila.

@DanielEriksson @fuzzychef perhaps tequila could be packaged in a box like some wine ("goon" to some Down Under)
@fuzzychef Important people should be banned from flying with small air crafts, let criminals like Gates fly those and risk his life.
@fuzzychef I’m sorry for everyone’s loss!

@fuzzychef Eeek!

He died like Gary Kildall. And we know what that unleashed on the world.
