I would say nice, but they are totally scratching up that beautiful mirror. ๐Ÿ˜”๐Ÿ˜‘๐Ÿ˜Ÿ

Ice that clear is also dangerously thin. ๐Ÿ˜ต
@yurnidiot Where is this?
Alaskans drawn to alpine lakes for โ€˜once-in-a-decadeโ€™ ice skating conditions

Sub-freezing temperatures and clear skies made for rare skating conditions in the alpine area surrounding Anchorage.

@yurnidiot the ADN article doesn't make me feel much better about the safety of that ice. Has to be cold enough to freeze to at least 4 inches but also has to be no snow which is apparently a pretty rare occurrence.

We get to do this in Finland maybe once a year, but everyone does it with a great deal of care.
Those women should have the requisite self-rescue spikes around their necks.
These two seem like Patagonian tourists from the industrial west.
@dnavinci @yurnidiot We skated & played hockey on early black ice ~8cm thick a couple winters in New Hampshire, November โ€˜63 & โ€˜64. Later in winter the ice thickened & would support vehicles, ice fishing shacks & motorcycle races on a plowed track.

We lost a Zamboni into the lake in Kuopio a few years back.

The locals only modestly appreciate what a unique feature they have, but they open something like 20km of outdoor tracks for most of February.
They have a world class romantic night skate with burning log torches.
Parents bring their babies bundled up on kick sleds and there are hot cocoa (and shared whiskey) waypoints along the track

@yurnidiot Clearly a metaphor for our Time no?
@yurnidiot @merileedkarr I've done that a very few times in Maine. Usually there's snow, so it's rare. But it's so cool to skate and look down and see fish.
