I'm quoted in this news article about Vernor Vinge's passing. He was a lovely person, and will be missed.

@scalzi

Very saddened.
A great writer.

RIP!

I loved A Fire Upon the Deep and its sequels
@scalzi He was the first writer I was aware of who wrote with programmer heroes that weren’t magical hackers. The books are pure entertainment and are a pleasure to reread.
@scalzi
So very sad.
Just recently re-read A Deepness In The Sky.
I sure wish someone, or some group, could 'focus' and cure Parkinsons or cancer for that matter.
@scalzi So many of the great ones are leaving us. Glad we have authors like you to carry the torch.

@scalzi Oh no! I met Vinge once at Norwescon. His paper on the Singularity is actually what convinced me that God isn’t real and it’s why I left Mormonism. That wasn’t the point of his paper, but while trying to come up with arguments about why an advanced intelligence would be inherently benevolent instead of malevolent as his argument seemed to assume, I ended up talking myself out of any god that human beings can define and ascribe human motivations to.

The essay I wrote challenging his paper (but not exploring the God conclusions) is still online at my original website. It was naive, but one of my early explorations on several topics that I have since delved much deeper into.

@scalzi I don’t think about it often, but I can’t overstate how much Vinge’s paper changed my life trajectory.
@scalzi Briefly got him mixed up with AE van Vogt and was very confused. Sorry to hear!
@scalzi oh! I really like his short story The Cookie Monster! Sad.
@scalzi just discovered his books this winter and am loving his world-building. Knowing now there won’t be more makes me want to read all of it immediately if not sooner.
@scalzi His books are brilliant. R.I.P.
