In spite of the great native plant diversity here in the Amazon region, people use mainly exotic ornamentals in their gardens. Natives are considered as "weeds" by most. However, even some fairly common native species like Ischnosiphon leucophaeus (Poepp. & Endl.) Körn. (Marantaceae) are quite attractive in my opinion, especially the foliage. The tiny flowers are beautiful, too (however, not "showy" enough for many gardeners, perhaps).

As somebody from Europe I'm still amazed every day by the plants I can grow in the garden here in Bragança ;-)
